Welcome back!
I was so happy so see everyone back with big smiles this week. The kids always seem that little bit more mature (and taller!) after a break. Mathematics We are finishing up our current unit on money and addition and subtraction through word problems. Our next unit will focus on collecting data, drawing graphs and interpreting the data. Literacy and UOI Having read many different versions of he Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks And The Three Bears, the children are now beginning to plan their own fractured fairy tale based on one of these original fairy tales. The children will be moving through the writing process - planning, drafting, editing and publishing. They are very excited about publishing their fairy tales and sharing them with you. Pink Shirt Day IMS teachers and students will be participating in Pink Shirt Day on February 28th. ISM students are encouraged to wear pink on this day. The aim is to raise awareness of the issue of bullying and foster kindness, respect for differences and international mindedness. Further information can be found on this website. https://www.pinkshirtday.ca/about/

We have been busy in class since since returning from Winter Break.
Mathematics Having finished an investigation into 2D and 3D shapes, we are once again working to extend and strengthen our addition and subtraction skills. Fluency of addition and subtraction within 20 is an important skill to master. This knowledge helps the students to extend themselves into adding and subtracting within 100. We are learning to do this through learning games, adding coins, speed tests and word problems. Three little rhymes help us when subtracting two three-digit numbers. Numbers the same? Zero's the game. More on the top? No need to stop. More on the floor? Go next door and get 10 more. Literacy and UOI We have been having fun exploring poetry. We have been challenged to really think about the message behind a poem (The Giving Tree) and to use the text to support answers to questions (Honey Sandwich). We can identify rhyme in a poem and some of us have even written some poems of our very own! We are now beginning to look at a selection of fairy tales and read different versions of The Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks And The Three Bears. We will be focusing on the differences in characters and plot as well as the similarities between the versions. Following this, we will explore the structure and language features of fairy tales. Our unit will culminate in each student composing their very own fractured fairy tale. Reminders: February 9th: Early Release February 12th - 16th Carnival Break We have a busy few weeks ahead, here are a few important dates to remember.
Please send all of the requested costume items for the concert to school as soon as possible. November 24th: Late dismissal for Winter Concert Rehearsal November 27th: Book Club orders close December 2nd: Winter Concert December 8th: Concert in Bamberg - 8:35 am departure from school. Please return the permission note and money by Dec 1st. December 14th: Primary Ice Skating Trip December 15th: 11:30 am Winter Break begins Dear Parents: Late Dismissal Notice
The excitement in the air around our whole school community about our upcoming Nutcracker musical has begun. Thank you for being so supportive, particularly via our dedicated PTO. Because one of the most difficult parts of a musical to organize is the curtain call (final song and bows), it always requires a double period with the whole Gr.1-10 student body. Since we try to avoid disrupting regular class time as much as possible until the final week, we have traditionally held students later on a Friday afternoon. This year that will be Friday, November 24th, when we will have a late dismissal at 3:10PM. ISM All of the children were so happy to see each other and catch up after the Fall Break. They enjoyed sharing and listening to what they had each been up to over the break.
UOI Our budding scientists are becoming confident in their understanding of the different states of matter. The children were very excited to plan and conduct their own experiments to test the quickest ways to get ice to melt. The class loved looking at each other's photos of them in action at home. In class we had wonderful discussions about the results of the experiments and the children worked together to form conclusions. Maths We have been learning about 3-D shapes and how to describe them using their attributes (faces, edges, vertices and so on). We are now learning about 2-D shapes and partitioning rectangles. This work with rectangles will help reinforce the concept of doubling in addition. Literacy As a class we have read a number of non-fiction texts on the topic of matter. We have been writing using the format of Scientific Method. We will continue with this as we work through our UOI. The children are each enjoying the free writing they are given in class to write their own stories. There is a big emphasis on planning before beginning any new writing and editing independently before editing with the teacher. As the children complete their current piece, they will publish it on their computer. Reminders November 27th: Book Club orders close Dec 2nd: Winter Concert Dec 14th: Primary Ice Skating Trip Dec 15th: 11:30 am Winter Break begins Grade 2 will be taking some time on Thursday to sit a practice MAP Test. We would like to give the students the opportunity to experience the test before they sit their Maths test on the 17th and English test on the 18th.
Please ensure your child brings their computer and charger with them on Thursday. They will also need these on the 17th and 18th. Spirit Week was a BLAST!
It was wonderful to see the commitment shown by the students as they worked hard to learn songs, dances and pomes for the House introductions on Wednesday. We had fun playing a variety of games against each other. The Students versus Teachers games were a highlight of the week for many students (and teachers)! What a way to end a great week! We are wrapping up our first UOI this week and will soon begin a more Science focused unit that explores matter. For this new unit, please provide a large, old (or cheap), white button up shirt that your child can wear as a lab coat for some of our lessons. I have a feeling there will be some budding scientists in our class! Please send this shirt to school with your child on Monday (or earlier if you would like). Please also send a safety pin with your child so we can attach their special name tag. In this unit we will be describing the properties of matter and exploring the changing states of matter. In maths we are working on skip counting and column addition. Later, we will begin a unit on Geometry. In Literacy, to support learning in UOI, we will be reading non-fiction texts. This will allow us to explore the features of non-fiction texts and work on comprehension skills. This Week is Spirit Week at ISM.
Just a reminder of the dress code details: Wednesday: House colours. Thursday: Funny and wacky house coloured costume with at least an accessory to show who your buddy brother/sister is. Friday: House colours. We have had another busy week!
In Literacy we have planned, drafted and published our compare and contrast pieces based on two different versions of The Three Little Pigs. We have also been exploring common and proper nouns. The students are developing their research skills through their current UOI. They are researching areas of change that are of interest to them. So far, the children are researching changes in farming, transportation, food and games. They will be using this information to create posters over the coming weeks. In Maths we have been focusing on learning and applying our knowledge of Number Bonds to 10 (addition facts within 10). This week we started exploring word problems. We have learnt that word problems can be worked out using an equation (number sentence) and a matching picture and are best answered in a full sentence. Check the Websites page for links to various Maths activities to review various skills. Reminders
Welcome back, Femke! We missed you.
We are all feeling a little under the weather at the moment. Any donations of tissues and hand sanitizer would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully we can minimise the spread of germs. Literacy While we are continuing on with our compare and contrast writing from last week, we are working on handwriting and reviewing our phonics knowledge. We had lots of fun last Friday working with sight words and building our word wall. The kids have already started looking at the word wall to hep them with their spelling, this is wonderful to see! Maths We are continuing to work with addition and subtraction and will be moving towards learning to apply this knowledge to solve word problems. Reminders
